Are you a British dual national who's been panicking about getting a new passport to return home? Well, there's good news! The British government has quietly announced a change that could make the process easier for thousands of people. But here's where it gets controversial...
The British government is now allowing dual nationals to have a lifelong digital stamp in their New Zealand passport instead of buying a new UK one. This means that instead of having to shell out £589 for a new certificate of entitlement, you can simply link it to your existing passport for free.
But why the sudden change? Some might argue that it's all about border security and making sure the UK knows who's entering their country. However, UK law professor Elspeth Guild, who specializes in border controls, suggests a different reason. She believes that the new requirement is linked to the need for better statistics on entry and exit data, especially for dual nationals.
"A number of countries insist that where their nationals are entering their 'home' country they must use their 'home' passport. This requirement seems to have a basis in the entitlement of countries to know whether their citizens are at home or not. The new insistence on the use of the home passport when entering a state, I think it [is] linked to the entry-exit databases where a lot of modifications were required to deal with dual nationals, and now states want to know."
So, what does this mean for you? If you're a British dual national with a New Zealand passport, you can breathe a sigh of relief. You don't need to rush out and buy a new UK passport, and you won't have to worry about the certificate of entitlement lasting only as long as your foreign passport.
But, as with any change, there are still some questions and concerns. Will there be staff at airports to assist British citizens when the new passport requirement comes into effect? And what about the rationale behind the change? The British High Commission has been asked for further comment, and we'll keep you updated as we hear more.
In the meantime, if you're a British dual national with a New Zealand passport, you can rest easy knowing that you have a lifelong digital stamp in your passport. But don't forget to keep an eye on the news for any further updates or changes. After all, it's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to travel documents!
