The carnivore diet, as explained by registered dietitian Jamie Nadeau, is an animal-based regimen allowing meats, fish, and small amounts of dairy. However, it eliminates all plant-based foods, including vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts. But here's the catch: visceral fat, while protective for organs, can increase cardiovascular disease risk when excessive. Many proponents of the carnivore diet cite similar weight loss benefits, comparing it to keto and other no-carb diets.

However, experts argue that this weight loss is unsustainable and can lead to health issues in the long run. "Most people regain weight and develop disordered eating behaviors," Nadeau warns. "Restrictive dieting is unnecessary and often counterproductive."

Cholesterol Concerns and Nutritional Deficiencies

Ansari, as a dietitian, does not recommend the carnivore diet due to its highly restrictive nature, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies over time. "Eliminating plant foods increases the risk of missing key vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients essential for cardiovascular and digestive health," she explains.

Like keto, the carnivore diet's high consumption of saturated fats can negatively impact cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease. Additionally, it poses risks of kidney stones, kidney impairment, gout, and osteoporosis.

"There's solid evidence supporting a well-balanced diet rich in plant-based foods," Nadeau concludes. "No evidence proves the benefits of the carnivore diet."
